Body confidence is an inside job. It’s not about how you look, it’s about how you feel. Building confidence takes self love. You need to learn to appreciate yourself and your life where it’s at right now. If you’re not confident about your body currently, you won’t be confident about it 10 lbs from now, or when you fit into your skinny jeans again. Body confidence shows up when you learn to love yourself.
Practicing self love can be a challenge, especially if you’re not used to it. It takes work every single day. But if you want to start feel happier in your own skin (and who doesn’t!), try showing yourself a little more love with the ideas below.
How to practise self love and improve your body confidence
1. Think positive
As soon as you wake up in the morning think of something positive. Maybe it’s a positive affirmation or just something that you’re grateful for about yourself. Thinking more positively about yourself can help to rewire your brain to love and appreciate who you are and what you’re capable of doing.
2. Tell your inner critic to shut up
Have you ever looked in the mirror and started picking apart your appearance? Maybe your dress is too baggy or your hair is too frizzy, or your skin is too pale. That’s your inner critic, and it sure seems to have a lot of opinions. Next time your inner critic has something to say, tell it to shut up. Nothing positive comes from listening to that little voice that constantly bad mouths you and makes you doubt yourself. You deserve better, so tune out.
3. Surround yourself with great people
Build a support system for yourself that includes friends and family that treat you well and appreciate you for who you are. Cut out toxic relationships and negative nancy’s that spend too much time bringing you down. Surrounding yourself with the right people will create supportive relationships that help you realize your own value and build your body confidence.
4. Move your body
Bodies weren’t designed for daily Netflix and chill sessions. Your body wants to move, stretch and explore. It’s not about getting a dream body, it’s about taking care of the one you have. Exercise should never feel like a punishment. Instead try to take pride in moving your body and giving it the attention it deserves. The more you move your body the more body confidence you’ll build.
5. Nourish your body
Eating healthy food isn’t only important for physical health. It’s good for your mental health too. Certain foods can support the brain, reduce depression and anxiety and help to support a happier you. The most important point though, is if you love yourself you will want to nourish and take care of the skin you’re in. Treats are definitely okay to enjoy once in a while (and pretty great for the soul), but for day to day eating, put the effort into fuelling your body with real whole foods.
6. Cut out negativity
If you’re in a situation you hate, don’t just complain about it. Leave it. Maybe you’re unhappy in your relationship, or you absolutely loath your job. Whatever the case, if you’re miserable in the situation, don’t stick around. I know it’s not always simple to get up and leave where you are, but at least put the ground work in place. If you want to leave your job, start applying elsewhere. If you’re unhappy in a relationship, talk to your partner about how you feel so you can make the situation better, or you can decided it’s time to move on. Cutting out negativity is really about prioritizing yourself and your own happiness. Say no to things that don’t serve you and take the jump to go after what you want.
7. Fuel your passion
Passion is the secret ingredient to an amazing life. If you’re not making time to do things that you love, you need to start. Feed your mind with creativity and things you enjoy. If you love painting, buy a blank canvas. If you love music, go to more concerts. Doing the stuff your passionate about is the difference between surviving and thriving.
8. Be patient
Self love is a work in progress, as is body confidence. Don’t beat yourself up if there are days you do better than others. When you’re feeling a bit low, remind yourself what is important. Think of things you’re grateful for, or repeat your positive affirmations. The more you practise the better you’ll get.
9. Find your happy place
Find it or create it, your happy place is all about where you feel your best. Having a happy place gives you somewhere that can inspire you and spark your creativity, or comfort you and make you feel at ease. It’s totally up to you how you create your happy place. If you don’t feel like you have a space that you consider your sanctuary, work on making one. That could mean changing up a room in your house, bringing in plants, or art or maybe even just a fresh coat of paint.
10. Be grateful
Gratitude is a grounding practice that teaches you how to be mindful and appreciate of your life and yourself. It’s quite simple. All you have to do is think of something that you’re grateful for. It can be big or it can be small. For example, you could be grateful for your family and your friends, or you could be grateful for the smoothie you’re drinking. The point is that everyday there is something to be grateful for. Bringing our awareness to that helps us be happier and create a sense of comfort. Try thinking of something you’re grateful for each day either first thing in the morning, or right before you go to bed.
11. Take me time
Life gets really busy so it’s important to leave time to connect with yourself. That’s why me time is important. Dedicate a piece of each day (big or small) to doing something that you enjoy. Relax to music, read a book, maybe try meditating. Choose something calming so you can do a little recharging.
Everyone knows that laughter is the best medicine, so obviously you should make more time for it. Learn to laugh at yourself when something goes wrong, go out and joke around with your girlfriends, or go see a comedy show. Either way, lighten up and laugh more.
